Every Violin is slightly different. You can get a set of gauges from Stewart MAcDonald, or Southwest Music that measure exactly the length of the soundpost needed. As long as you are ordering the gauges, be sure to order the soundpost material too. Remember that the soundpost has to be rounded off when it's cut, and it has to be slanted to fit the curve of the soundboard. If you feel a little nervous about undertaking such a project, you can also contact your local luthier. They already have the tools and materials needed and can usually do the repair while you wait, or in a day or two at the most. Personally, I would go with the luthier, but some folks are just adventurous

There is no standard answer, really; setting a soundpost is a very artistic thing which only a luthier should do; it's entirely depending on the particular instrument.
