You bow has most likely not been primed. The hair on the bow is generally made from the tails of Horses from Siberia. These horse hairs have more cilia, or tiny hairs, that form a net to help keep the horses warm in extremely cold weather. When you pass your bow over the cake of rosin, these cilia grab onto a little bit of the sticky tree sap. When you pass your bow over the string, the sticky tree sap causes the string to vibrate and sound is produced. What you need to do is to pass your bow over the rosin the same way you would bow your instrument, from frog to tip, between seventy five to one hundred and fifty times, or until the hair starts to "grab" at the rosin. Then, when you pass your bow perpendicularly (straight across) between the fingerboard and the bridge, it should produce a sound. If it squeaks or scratches, pull the bow (or push it) faster or apply a little more pressure. Remember the rule that all string players live by:

We have to be willing to sound bad before we sound good!

Hope this helps.

that happened to me when i first began lessons in 5th grade....u need to apply rosin. lots and lots and lots of rosin to the bow. keep trying! also, tighten the strings by twisting the lil metal nob/screw on the base end of the bow - not too tight tho, cause that can ruin it. just a tad tight so its playable.
You need to either tighten your bow, or put rosin on the bowhair.
What a silly question! Learn to play it; that would be a good way to get a sound out of it! Don't forget, you do have to use the bow!
