How long does it take to learn the violin, and...?

does it matter how old you are when you learn it?

I am 23...I played violin a bit when I was a kid but didn't like practicing so never got particularly good at it. I could play songs and all back then...but it's been a long time and I remember nothing about how to play. But lately I've sort of been regretting that I stopped and vaguely wondering how hard it would be to pick up.

Additionally...how much would a decent violin cost to get?

Just curious...

I don't really think there's an age limit for learning anything (unless you're in really bad physical/mental condition). You could probably be like 90 years old and if you're still healthy inside and out, you could learn stuff. Of course, it wouldn't be as fast as if you learn it if you're younger but you still could, technically.

As to how much a decent violin would cost, I would say at least over $700. Don't buy those cheap ones on eBay or Target/Sam's Club etc! The tone quality is bad, itcould break/scratch easily and it gets out of tune easily. Plus its hard to keep it in tune. Those violins give you a really hard time, so I would just invest in a little bit more expensive violin , than all of those repairs/stress. You should check out the nearest music store and see what they have. I understand there's price ranges for everyone. If you're really thinking about pursuing this, then you should aim for one over $1000. There really is a big difference in the sound. There's ones that sound boxed in as you shift into higher positions and cheap ones squeak a lot. I have a violin that's $3000, and its amazing. Don't forget about the price of the bow and case. Bows range anywhere from $50-couple hundreds.

I'm sorry for this really long explanation, but I'm just trying to explain this, and I hope this helps you and your search!

A decent violin will cost around $600.00

It is never too late and when you pick it up the music will come through your brain, to your ears, into your fingers and you will know how to bow.

Don't think about it anymore; just do it.
if u know the sound of each note it won't be so hard but violin i heard is the hardest instrument to play
it'll probably be easier since you know some music already. it'll also depend on how dedicated you are and how much you practice. if you stick with it, you'll see a lot of progress. as for cost, plan for at least a couple hundred dollars for an okay violin. if you stick with it, you can always invest more money in a better violin later.
The violin, like any instrument, takes time and practice to learn. At 23 you are too old to take up the violin as anything but a hobby. Most professional violinists have been learning and honing their skills since they were 4 or 5 as I am sure you know. At your level I would hesitate to spend more than $200 or $300 on a beginner violin, just to make sure it is really something you want to do. You will need to find a teacher and be willing to practice at least 1 hour per day outside of your lessons. A local university is a good place to find a teacher. Find the violin studio and ask the professor(s) about teachers and most likely they will hook you up with an advanced student for beginning lessons. Expect to pay anywhere from $20 to $45 per hour for lessons.
It also depends on how much time you have and if you have the patience for it. An issue with the violin is that it'll sound pretty awful when you're first starting out, and for the first few years. With other instruments, such as piano, you can produce a decent sound from the beginning because you don't have to worry as much about the intonation. However, with violin the intonation is much more difficult, as well as bow control and everything else.

If you have the time and patience, then go for it. It takes awhile, but when you can finally produce a good sound, it is extremely fulfilling.
