I pulled out my old violin which I haven't played in 6 years, and when I run the bow along the strings they make no sound whatsoever.

The bow has some stray hairs and the strings have never been changed on it.

I've tried playing harder, but so very faint sound is all I can get.

Why is this?

If you have rubbed rosin all over it and it still won't work, then you really haven't rosined it enough to work it into the hairs. Look at the top of the cake of rosin to see if the hairs have made any imprint, or if you're just sliding along the top. Try roughing-up the top of the rosin by scratching it with a key or similar item to loosen up the dust a bit and get it to grab the hairs better as you draw the bow across.

Because there's no rosin on the bow. Rosin it a good deal and then see if it will play.
you need to put rosin on it.
