Suggestions to protect the violin from cracking or getting damaged due to the cold climate of winter?

How do I protect my violin from winter climate? I came from the Phils going to Melbourne,Australia by July.Thxtheater seating

A stringed instrument should always be kept in a moderate environment of about 60鈥?0掳F with 50 percent humidity. A few of us are fortunate enough to live in a region with these constant conditions, but most of us do not. In much of the United States, winters are very cold鈥攚ith heated homes driving the humidity down to 10 or 15 percent鈥攁nd the summers are often hot and humid. If you live in the American Southwest, where it's hot and dry a good deal of the time, you need to take extra measures to stabilize the conditions inside the instrument case. In addition to physical damage, stringed instruments suffer tonally from humidity changes. A dry climate will often cause the tone to become hard, edgy, and dry. Conversely, excess humidity causes instruments to sound dull, thick, and unresponsive.

So how do you maintain the correct temperature and humidity around your instrument? The two basic approaches to consider are managing the humidity within the instrument itself and addressing the climate in the instrument's storage area, that is, in the case. There are many commercial products avail-able, and some home-grown solutions, that take one or the other approach. Here are a few options:

Instrumental Devices

Some players prefer to use a humidifier that goes in the instrument rather than in the case; others decry this practice, fearing that it could expose the wood to direct contact with water. The best-known product of this type is the Dampit, sold in many stores. Models for violin range from $7.50 to $10 each. (Similar products include the Humitron, distributed by RDM Enterprises.) The concept is simple: The Dampit is a flexible, perforated green tube with a sponge inside it. After moistening the sponge, you insert the Dampit into one of the f-holes and leave it in the instrument when you're not playing it. When the sponge inside the Dampit dries out, you simply remoisten it. The drier the climate, the more frequently you need to check the moisture level (in very dry conditions, two Dampits may be needed鈥攐ne in each f-hole).

However, violin makers and dealers鈥攁nd players鈥攁re split in their acceptance of this type of product. Some say you need to check the Dampit diligently in very dry climates to make sure it is consistently moist. And some claim that the Dampit itself can damage an instrument by introducing too much moisture into the instrument's environment. Despite the differing opinions between makers and dealers, most musicians accept this product due to its simplicity.

In the Case

If you want to control the climate in the case, you have several ways to go. A good place to start is to look for a padded case cover, much like the ones made by Bobelock ([800] 862-3468) and Mooradian (www.mooradian.com). (Note that Mooradian also manufactures covers that other companies sell under their own labels.) These bags offer insulation to protect against both hot and cold weather. And there are other alternatives, though there's no consensus on their value.

You might also consider adding a hygrometer and a humidifier to your case, or buying a case that's equipped with these accessories. A hygrometer measures the level of humidity, while a humidifier can correct dryness. An in-case humidifier often comes in the form of a small tube filled with water-saturated material that releases moisture at a controlled rate.

Many violin and viola cases include a built-in hygrometer and a vaporizer bottle. I find that the little vaporizer bottles don't provide enough humidity in very dry conditions, but they do work in more moderate situations. In its more expensive cases, Musafia (www.musafianorthamerica.com) includes a humidifier that looks like a short string tube. It is perforated and filled with a sponge, and mounted inside the lid of the case鈥揳 rather clever idea. San Francisco Symphony assistant concertmaster Jeremy Constant reportedly purchased a Musafia case partly for its humidifier. "When you're touring in the winter, it's a godsend," he explains, "because everything is so horrifically dry. [Sponge-like humidifiers] are a losing effort unless you are willing to have one in each f-hole."

For the do-it-yourselfer, Radio Shack sells a small combination digital thermometer and hygrometer that you can keep in your case. It costs about $25. For a home-made humidifier, some musicians I know use a plastic 35mm-film canister, perforated with several holes and with a sponge inside (moistened as needed). This is mounted inside the case with Velcro. One musician I know uses a travel soap container, also perforated and with a sponge inside.

A more elaborate and reportedly efficient in-case approach is the Stretto system, distributed by Shar Products (www.sharmusic.com). It includes a hygrometer and thermometer to monitor the climate, and several perforated pouches that you moisten as needed to maintain the appropriate humidity level. The system costs about $79, the humidifier alone costs $44.

PLAY IT SAFE

Even if you use one of the humidification systems mentioned in this article, you should take additional steps to protect your violin, viola, cello, or double bass. I strongly recommend the following:

Avoid extremes in temperature or humidity.

Never leave your instrument in a closed car. Besides the possibility of theft, on a hot, sunny day the temperature in the passenger compartment can quickly rise to 120掳F or more.

Never put your instrument in the trunk of your car, especially when it is hot or cold.

Don't store your instrument near a heater or air conditioner.

Unless your home is well insulated, don't store your instrument near an outside wall.

well...I live in Texas...where it can get really hot and can also hurt my violin...but I just always make sure to keep it at a mild temperated area. I would put extra cloths on it just in case and also just try to keep it anywhere with some sort of warmth...good luck!
I live where it gets really cold, and my violin doesn't usually do anything, just go out of tune a lot...get one of those humidity things and put on a humidifer if it gets too dry

Why do people play "air" violin when someone is upset?

I've seen people before pretend to play violin, almost like air guitar, when someone is either upset or complaining about something. Does anyone know why they do this?

Why do people play "air" violin when someone is upset?theatre tickets

The origin of this action started with the song "Hearts and Flowers" published in 1899. The violin version came to represent in silent films any scenes that were melodramatic, sentimental or mock-tragic. Pretending to play the violin (and humming the tune if you know it) when someone is complaining about something means you are playing "Hearts and Flowers" for their melodramatic scene or problem like was done in the silent movies.

Musician, composer, teacher.

Why do people play "air" violin when someone is upset?opera house opera theater

The violin is an instrument usually associated with sorrow. When one plays an "air violin," he is responding to another's sorrowful state. This is usually a form of sarcasm, representing the lack of care one feels of the other's pain or sorrow.

An example,

Skinny woman says, "I feel so fat today."

Larger woman plays the air violin.

Worker complains about his working conditions.

Boss plays the air violin.
I believe it's called the pity violin. They `pity` the person, so they play the pity violin.

Rather mean if you ask me.
because the violin is usually played in a sad or depressing part of a movie or a play.
a7x is correct : in the old movies whenever a sad part came on, the background music would usually be very sad violin music......... often with a very wide vibrato.
Because they don't have any sympathy for the person - it's the "poor me" "don't you feel sorry for me" attitude that annoys people so they play a pretend violin.
It mean that they don't really care what you're complaining about or think that it is a stupid complain.

How do I keep my violin strings tight?

I have a violin (granted it is of a bit lower quality). The problem I have is the pegs that hold the strings tight lack friction and the strings loosen in the case so they're out of tune. Does anyone know any tricks to keep them taught?

What's the difference in Classical and electric violins and can you use a classical violin shol

I have been playing for over 5 years. Is that long enough to switch to an electric? Another question I have, would it sound right for me to play my electric violin with my classical orchestra if it is not pluged in(will it sound the same)?

What's the difference in Classical and electric violins and can you use a classical violin sholder rest w/them

You can not play an electric violin with an orchestra- without plugging it it the instrument makes very little sound and has no resonance at all. Check the link for comparison pictures.

As to the sound, an electric violin can sound like a regular violin, but there's a difference- I don't think they sound good together.

When was the guitar and violin first discovered in the music history?

And which musical instrument is older..violin or guitar. What do u prefer and like more.

When was the guitar and violin first discovered in the music history?opera music

It is believed that the violin originated from Italy in the early 1500's. It evolved from the fiddle and rebec, both were bowed string instruments from the Medieval period. The violin also emerged from the lira da braccio, a violin-like instrument of the Renaissance period.

It is Andrea Amati who is the known developer of the violin. Amati apprenticed as a lute maker and in 1525, he became a master instrument maker.

The earliest noted violin makers were Gasparo da Sal貌 and Giovanni Maggini, both Italians, but it is during the 17th and early 18th centuries that the art of violin making reached its' peak.

The earliest form of the violin is very different from that of today. The early violins had a neck that was shorter, thicker and less angled. The fingerboard was likewise shorter, the bridge was flatter and the strings were made of gut.

What should I look for in an antique violin?

This is a question for violinists and collectors of fine stringed instruments:

Let's say I was at an auction and an obviously old violin (with a bow and case) was being displayed before it was put up for bid. As a complete novice (who is interested in learning to play and has an appreciation for the history and beauty of these instruments), what should I be looking for when examining the instrument? Please be specific. Don't say "look for good quality" or "make sure it's in good condition". I don't know what good quality or good condition look like. That's what I'm asking. What makes this violin a good or bad investment? What are some signs that it's been well taken care of? Played regularly? Well-made and well-designed? True antique or knock-off? Also, any links to good guides or info pages would be useful.

What should I look for in an antique violin?phantom of the opera

for any string instrument, you should be looking for good tonal quality. This is, however, only one of MANY factors that goes into investing in an instrument. if you are just starting to play, I would not suggest going out to buy a really nice antique, but collecting is fine.

First thing you have to decide is how old you want it to be. If you want a Baroque Violin (the oldest), then that is a completely from most other Violins. you may want to look inside the Violin to see the name of the maker and when it was made (it will be on the label placed below the f-hole on the left).

If you are going to play it eventually, you want to have a really nice-sounding instrument. This decision is opinion oriented, but a novice shouldn't be alone in making a decision like this. Get a friend who is an advanced string musician to help you find the right instrument. A Violin that rings and has a sultry tone, in my opinion, is optimal.

many old instruments need to be repaird, and that can be costly. if you see a Violin that you want to buy, but is in need of reperations, you have to consider whether or not it will be worth it. Keep in mind that instruments often sound even better aftr being repaired.

good luck!

What should I look for in an antique violin?listen to opera opera theater

If you were a novice then you would NOT be buying an old violin at an antique auction.

You would have to play it to see what it sounded like or have an experienced player do that and give an opinion.

Then you would have to look at the condition of the instrument. Are there any cracks or visible defects in the violin ?

Then you would have to consider the provenance of the instrument. Who made it and when ? Where did it come from ? Who has owned it in the past ? Is there documentation to support this ?

A violin that has not been played regularly will sound a bit dull and lifeless. An experienced player will be able to tell by the sound when he/she plays it. Most old violins will show signs of use such as wearing of the varnish and a few chips off the timber in places. This should not detract from the value. The ageing of the varnish is part of the charm of the old violins and should never be touched or fooled with in any way. This would devalue it greatly.

Unfortunately I cannot give you any links because yahoo answers is not letting me post links this morning....I am not sure why? They are not coming up in blue like they usually do.

I want to learn the violin, and to read music...any teaching software that can teach a moron like me

To term me as "beginner" is too advanced a term. I have a 4 x 4 violin, whatever that means. I need software, interactive dvd, something that breaks it ALL down into intensely simple instructions that a dimented rock can understand. I don't know jack, I want to learn to read music, notes, all positioning, fine tuning, cleaning and caring, tips and tricks, plus increasingly challenging cords to ultimately turn me to what others would refer to as a "professional" or "master violinist".

I want to learn the violin, and to read music...any teaching software that can teach a moron like me?opera mini

I don't think software is gonna do it. An actual person will be able to properly assess your level of skill and form a teaching regime based around that. Software can't do that, and you need it, especially with an instrument like the violin (which can be VERY difficult to learn). Also, I've never heard the term 4 x 4 used for a violin before, but I assume that means it's a full-size violin. I started out on a three-quarter size violin and as my body and arms grew, I worked my way up to a full-size (I started in around fourth grade).

And if you need to learn to read music first, slow down a second. Don't leap right into the violin; I would actually suggest taking a few piano lessons first, and learning how to read music based on that. You will also need to know some basic theory.

The bottom line is, you're not going to get good just based off of a few lessons on the computer or a DVD. It takes time, effort, and a good teacher with tremendous patience. Also, if you do start learning, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

Good luck!

You might want to go to violinmasterclass.com as they have the best forums with people that can really help. They also have videos and other stuff.

As for software, I really doubt that you can become good with that. If you want to be good at violin or any instrument, the best way is through a teacher. Maybe take fewer lessons or something for shorter amounts of time but a real person is going to do you wonders. It will take a lot of practice and hard work, but it will be worth it.

It takes years if not a whole lifetime to be come a master violinist, though it is possible. The first and foremost thing I would do is contact a teacher if that is really want you want to be.

Hope this helps.

How should I develop my vibrato on the violin?

I am a Grade-4 violinist, who had to leave his music school for some reasons. And I have no one now to teach me the vibrato effect on my violin, which was the next thing I was suppossed to learn! So I am desperately soliciting good tips and methods of starting and developing my violin vibrato.

I would be highly highly obliged to all those who answer!

How should I develop my vibrato on the violin?met opera

In your case, I think the best thing for you to do now is to find another good violin teacher. To be honest, there are so many ways you could do vibrato that it really varies with each person. Every person's hand is different, and their way of holding the violin is slightly different, so to just learn how to do vibrato over the internet won't help you. When you learn it by yourself, you could easily get into injury just because it's hard to relax the hand at first.

How should I develop my vibrato on the violin?movie theatre opera theater

As for me, I have found that I use 3 kinds of vibrato.

1) Arm vibrato;

2) wrist vibrato; and

3) finger vibrato.

To practice the arm vibrato, I put a piece of cloth against the wall and put my violin against it. Then I try to move my arm (keeping the wrist steady)...

For wrist, try the same thing but move the wrist only instead. For finger vibrato - it is hard to describe...ask someone to show you.

ask for some advice in this violin forum
I'm afraid I really can't suggest any site to help you. You might try 8notes.com, but even then. Violin is an extremely difficult instrument where movements in bowing and such must be done with precision and a musical ear must be acquired during the learning process (there are no frets, after all, to help locate notes), so I do not recommend attempting to learn it on your own. I was going to when I first started, but believe me, had I done it, I would have given up after a month or so. I still don't have it anywhere near mastered, and I had a great teacher when I was able to have lessons. I strongly advise you get some sort of music teacher to help you along the way. Good luck.

Sound post for 4/4 violin?

How long should a sound post for a 4/4 violin be??

Thanks !!!! :)

Sound post for 4/4 violin?movie theater

Every Violin is slightly different. You can get a set of gauges from Stewart MAcDonald, or Southwest Music that measure exactly the length of the soundpost needed. As long as you are ordering the gauges, be sure to order the soundpost material too. Remember that the soundpost has to be rounded off when it's cut, and it has to be slanted to fit the curve of the soundboard. If you feel a little nervous about undertaking such a project, you can also contact your local luthier. They already have the tools and materials needed and can usually do the repair while you wait, or in a day or two at the most. Personally, I would go with the luthier, but some folks are just adventurous

There is no standard answer, really; setting a soundpost is a very artistic thing which only a luthier should do; it's entirely depending on the particular instrument.

His playing of the violin is something not alot of young adults are into and look at it as being week and prey on them. I need help chosing a violin for my 11 year old!!!?

Has anyone heard of Cecilio brand? I found that brand to be really cheap on line. I don't want to spend a lot of money, but I don't want him to be discouraged by a crappy sounding violin either.

Please give me personal opinions. And other brand suggestions. I don't really need web addresses to stores yet, just real info.

I need help chosing a violin for my 11 year old!!!?movie theatre

That sounds like an eBay violin. These are very poor sounding instruments and are referred to as "VSOs" (violin shaped objects) by violinists. I would recommend that you look into renting a used violin or a rent-to-buy program. Unlike piano, a violinist really needs to hear the notes played, get them in tune and achieve a lovely tone - all of which cannot be done on a cheap violin. Sharmusic.com is a well known online shop and they offer violin rentals starting at $16/month.

However, if your daughter is starting out then this Cecilio violin can do the trick for the first few months since she will be learning how to hold the violin and bow and how to read music, etc. Be sure that the violin is "set up" when you buy it or else you will have to pay your local violin shop some money to put the strings and the bridge on. Also, make sure your daughter put LOTS of rosin on her new bow or else it won't make a sound.

I need help chosing a violin for my 11 year old!!!?playhouse opera theater

I've never heard of that brand before in my 15 years of teaching. Its really risky to buy a violin online though, you just never know what you'll end up getting, plus you need to make sure its the right size, some kids aren't ready for a full size and may need a 3/4 size violin(which is the next size down from a full size). At all costs avoid Chinese Violins, especially SkyLark Violins, they are just slapped together and don't stay in tune. It's really best to go to a music store and have someone measure him for a violin (preferably a string specialist, sometimes employees at music stores are more geared towards band instruments) I know you said you don't need websites but sharmusic.com is great and you can get a free catalog, plus they have an 800 # you can call with questions and violinist.com is pretty good for more info. Good luck and I hope your son enjoys many years of playing. Oh, another general rule if the violin is German, French, or Italian made chances are they are pretty good, there are a lot of reasonable German Student Models that are good!!!
you should rent the first one. The size she needs will change from age 11 to age 16 about 2 or 3 times. Many places do 1 year or 8 month rental contracts.

After that, if your child is still interested in the violin, she will know exactly what she wants.

(I've been through it with 3 girls)
I bought this violin for my husband, he likes it. Read the reviews it got.
For real info about real violins (or any other stringed instrument) you should find someone who either teaches how to play violins or who sells and repairs stringed instruments. I play the cello, not the violin, but I know that for cellos there are no brand names, and you get what you pay for. There are some places where you can rent instruments, this might be good if you aren't sure if your child will continue with the violin for long. You really should get advice from a professional in your area.
She needs a rental one. It is much cheaper than buying a violin.

I bought my violin at the Amati Violin Shop. It is in Texas, if you google it you should see their website. Either email them about renting one or get their number (probably on their website).

You first need to get your daughter sized for the violin before you rent one. The average 11 year old would need a 3/4 size violin.

most guitar players dont really read or learn music at all, thats about 97.9% or guitarist dont know how to read music. all i can tell you that if you want to play guitar go ahead, i started the same age as you are now, i have been playing guitar since 1999 and i did learn how to read music, but its more fun when you learn songs you hear on the radio, that would give you a better basic

I want to switch from violin to guitar but know nothing about it?classical music opera theater

You could take lessons at your local music store, (if they offer them). Its good to learn to read sheet music. But you can also learn to read tabs and learn to play the songs you like.

As far as cost acoustic is generally cheaper than electric. With electric you have to buy an amp along with it. You could get a decent electric for around 250 to 300 dollars. An decent acoustic is somewhere around... $120-$150. Whether or not you want get an acoustic or electric depends on what kind of music you like.
trust me, learning guitar is easy, i got started with only one begginer book, i didn't even finish it, i got bored of the book and started learning songs after 1 or 2 months. just get a book and chord chart to get started, then learn how to read guitar tabs and stuff. but no matter what, DO NOT STOP PLAYING VIOLIN!!! or else i'll personaly come and smash up your guitar, no i won't but don't stop, trust me. i stopped playing piano years ago cause i thought it was boring, cause my lessons were boring. but not i regret that decision...i would LOVE to remember how to play piano...

anyways, you can find everything you need at your local musical instrument store. don't buy a guitar from a place like best buy or radio shack, they suck, have crappy tone, and horrible quality. go to a music store, ask them questions, i recommend acoustic, but theres nothing wrong with starting out electric, i just recommend acoustic. but i started electric...anyways, just go to a music store and ask them to show you starter packs if you wanna save money on an electric, or you can go to a pawn shop.
Take classes, listen to a lot of guitarist of the genre you want to play, practice, practice, practice
Nylon string classical guitars are cheap and probably the easiest guitar to learn on.

I bought a "blemished" version of this one for $80!

If you have rubbed rosin all over it and it still won't work, then you really haven't rosined it enough to work it into the hairs. Look at the top of the cake of rosin to see if the hairs have made any imprint, or if you're just sliding along the top. Try roughing-up the top of the rosin by scratching it with a key or similar item to loosen up the dust a bit and get it to grab the hairs better as you draw the bow across.

I'm finding it hard to hold a violin, can someone please give me tips and make my lesson easier?symphony

Tell your teacher that it is hurting your collarbone and that you might need a different shoulder rest. There are all different kinds of shoulder rests. I keep a variety at my house for students to try, but a violin shop should have them as well. Sometimes you just need a simple sponge, others do better with a more elaborate shoulder rest. My personal preference is the Wolf "Secondo" (the Primo model dug into the back of my violin, but other people I know really like the Primo). It's about $30 or so, not the most expensive, but not the cheapest. My daughter and I both use it.

Shar sells a really nice shoulder rest that several of my students use. It's very inexpensive and it stays on really well, and is not too high. It's called the Maestro and is less than $10.

I played with a lousy posture for 8 years. It didn't really affect me too much, just made me seem as if I wasn't very passionate about what I was playing.

I used to play with my chin squeezing the violin onto my collarbone, and my palm flat on the neck of the violin for support. It was a bit hard at first to do vibrato or go into 2nd or 3rd positions, but I managed to overcome it by practice.

That is - I still had the exact same posture but my hands were always sweaty, and I would use that slide up and down the neck of the violin.
Are you using some sort of cushion between the violin and your collarbone? My violin teacher had me use a piece of foam.

Go to swstrings.com.

That's where I got my main violin, as well as bows and most accessories. It's an amazing place to start out.

I'd recommend you call them, and describe to them your playing abilities and such. That's what I did; they were able to recommend brands and products to match my needs. Then, they allowed me to test out the violins I liked, sending two at a time, until I fell in love with one.

There's really no certain brand for anyone. Everyone is different, and everyone needs something different. So, try around, and see what you like. If you try something, and like certain aspects, but dislike certain aspects, tell whatever company you go to about what you do and don't like, and eventually, they can help to specifically recommend instruments that are exactly what you need.

Personally, I particularly recommend Franz Werner violins -- I've tested several, and own one; I always like them.

Also feel free to check out sharmusic.com, as well as wwbw.com. Kepharts is also good; I don't know whethery they'll ship instruments, but the service is amazing.

Good luck with whatever you pick :]

try going to the southwest strings or shar websites. they have fairly good instruments. also, if you can find a teacher to ask, that'd be very helpful, as they could recommend which instrument is best for your playing style.

as for strings, that'll also depend on what kind of sound your instrument has. personally, i like zyex strings, because they have a good sound quality on almost any instrument, and they adjust to your instrument quickly.

no clue where they're loacated
I don't know where you live or how much money you have to spend on a violin so its hard to advise you.

IMO, I wouldn't buy an instrument through the Internet, and especially not one that I was planning to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars for. Every instrument I've ever bought (guitars, mandolins, banjos, and fiddles) has been purchased from a music store -- or an individual seller -- where I had the opportunity to try them out and fall in love with "the one" that I had to have :-) If you don't like the music store near your house, I'd recommend finding a violin shop, even if it means traveling a bit further, and check out what they have in stock.

Personally, I'm also a fan of older, used fiddles rather than new instruments; they've been played in and have a better, more developed sound than something straight out of the factory. A lot of times you can get an older fiddle that's better than a shiny brand-new one for the same price. But the only way to shop for a secondhand violin is to go to a shop or a dealer that carries a selection of them, and try a bunch of them out. You can find tons of older violins on E-bay, but unless you're really knowledgeable, its very hard to know what you're buying, as older fiddles don't really have "brand names" or known makers unless you're looking to spend thousands of dollars. If you're looking for something under $1,000, the used violins you'll find will be mostly anonymous student-grade factory made instruments -- but those often sound really nice and will serve you well. And if you buy from a reputable dealer or violin shop, you can be sure that the instrument you get will have been setup properly to play and sound its best.

I've played for 8 years, having an instructor made learning vibrato possible, on your own you really have no clue how it should sound and will often times end up with machine gun beat instead of smooth waves. Keep taking lessons and ask to have specific lessons done on those. You will do so much better. Being shown how on the interent when it comes to an instrument does nothing for you compared to having someone help you in person move your hand, hold your posture, everything. Trust me, stay with your teacher.

-Ask at the highschool about coming in after school and getting help from a recommended student by the teacher. They can be much cheaper and if a teacher recommentds them then they must be doing something right. Even as a hobby, interenet videos don't cut it. You need one on one help to get anywhere.
Having played the cello for years, I don't think there is any substitute for hands on instruction. No video can put its hands on your wrist and make that tiny correction in bow technique, etc. No website can listen to your legato and tell you if it's smooth enough or needs to be changed. If you're serious about your music, you need a live instructor. If you just want to do it as a hobby, then videos are OK.

How do you get a violin to make sound...?

i just bought a violin... but whenever i bow it, nothing happens... i don't know what i'm doing wrong or what i'm not doing.... so how do you get it to work?

How do you get a violin to make sound...?ms stress

You bow has most likely not been primed. The hair on the bow is generally made from the tails of Horses from Siberia. These horse hairs have more cilia, or tiny hairs, that form a net to help keep the horses warm in extremely cold weather. When you pass your bow over the cake of rosin, these cilia grab onto a little bit of the sticky tree sap. When you pass your bow over the string, the sticky tree sap causes the string to vibrate and sound is produced. What you need to do is to pass your bow over the rosin the same way you would bow your instrument, from frog to tip, between seventy five to one hundred and fifty times, or until the hair starts to "grab" at the rosin. Then, when you pass your bow perpendicularly (straight across) between the fingerboard and the bridge, it should produce a sound. If it squeaks or scratches, pull the bow (or push it) faster or apply a little more pressure. Remember the rule that all string players live by:

We have to be willing to sound bad before we sound good!

Hope this helps.

How do you get a violin to make sound...?home theater system opera theater

that happened to me when i first began lessons in 5th grade....u need to apply rosin. lots and lots and lots of rosin to the bow. keep trying! also, tighten the strings by twisting the lil metal nob/screw on the base end of the bow - not too tight tho, cause that can ruin it. just a tad tight so its playable.
You need to either tighten your bow, or put rosin on the bowhair.
What a silly question! Learn to play it; that would be a good way to get a sound out of it! Don't forget, you do have to use the bow!

Is it possible to play violin and sing at the same time? I mean.........?

I know that you can do that with the piano and guitar, but is it possible with the violin? It puts you in a sort of awkward position to sing.

i think its possible, with a little practice of course
Yes if u have good concetration i've seen kids in my school do it.
All you need is a headset mic. That solves the problem.
It would be hard I think because you hold the violin so close to your throat. But I'm sure you could probably do it if you practice enough.....
I think you can but you have to hold the instrument lower on the chest like some folk players do - not tucked securely under the chin like classical players.
of course you can!!!! :-) go n try it !
Oh, yeah, I've seen that guy from Yellowcard do it for a few songs.

Curtis Institute of Music is by far the best, and the hardest to get into to. (Philly, PA) Acceptance is like 6.5%

In NYC, you have Juilliard (of course), the Manhattan School for Music, and the Mannes School of Music. NYU is better for graduates. (I hear Yale is giving all music graduates full scholarship, you might want to keep that in mind. They have a great department!) Stony Brook on long island has Midori, the Emerson Quartet in residence, as well as the Kavifans! Don't know how easy it is to study with them though.

Boston- New England Conservatory, Boston Conservatory

Maryland- Peabody

Don't know if this still counts as 'east', but I hear Jaime Laredo is on faculty at Indiana University!

The Cleveland Institute of Music in Ohio is quite good with a fantastic faculty. Not on the East coast though. ;)

Knilling made student grade violins for decades and I sold both Knillings and Roths back in the seventies. They are good instruments, generally not as good as Roth but perfectly fine to learn on.

How long does it take to learn the violin, and...?

does it matter how old you are when you learn it?

I am 23...I played violin a bit when I was a kid but didn't like practicing so never got particularly good at it. I could play songs and all back then...but it's been a long time and I remember nothing about how to play. But lately I've sort of been regretting that I stopped and vaguely wondering how hard it would be to pick up.

Additionally...how much would a decent violin cost to get?

Just curious...

How long does it take to learn the violin, and...?state theatre

I don't really think there's an age limit for learning anything (unless you're in really bad physical/mental condition). You could probably be like 90 years old and if you're still healthy inside and out, you could learn stuff. Of course, it wouldn't be as fast as if you learn it if you're younger but you still could, technically.

As to how much a decent violin would cost, I would say at least over $700. Don't buy those cheap ones on eBay or Target/Sam's Club etc! The tone quality is bad, itcould break/scratch easily and it gets out of tune easily. Plus its hard to keep it in tune. Those violins give you a really hard time, so I would just invest in a little bit more expensive violin , than all of those repairs/stress. You should check out the nearest music store and see what they have. I understand there's price ranges for everyone. If you're really thinking about pursuing this, then you should aim for one over $1000. There really is a big difference in the sound. There's ones that sound boxed in as you shift into higher positions and cheap ones squeak a lot. I have a violin that's $3000, and its amazing. Don't forget about the price of the bow and case. Bows range anywhere from $50-couple hundreds.

I'm sorry for this really long explanation, but I'm just trying to explain this, and I hope this helps you and your search!

How long does it take to learn the violin, and...?theater opera theater

A decent violin will cost around $600.00

It is never too late and when you pick it up the music will come through your brain, to your ears, into your fingers and you will know how to bow.

Don't think about it anymore; just do it.
if u know the sound of each note it won't be so hard but violin i heard is the hardest instrument to play
it'll probably be easier since you know some music already. it'll also depend on how dedicated you are and how much you practice. if you stick with it, you'll see a lot of progress. as for cost, plan for at least a couple hundred dollars for an okay violin. if you stick with it, you can always invest more money in a better violin later.
The violin, like any instrument, takes time and practice to learn. At 23 you are too old to take up the violin as anything but a hobby. Most professional violinists have been learning and honing their skills since they were 4 or 5 as I am sure you know. At your level I would hesitate to spend more than $200 or $300 on a beginner violin, just to make sure it is really something you want to do. You will need to find a teacher and be willing to practice at least 1 hour per day outside of your lessons. A local university is a good place to find a teacher. Find the violin studio and ask the professor(s) about teachers and most likely they will hook you up with an advanced student for beginning lessons. Expect to pay anywhere from $20 to $45 per hour for lessons.
It also depends on how much time you have and if you have the patience for it. An issue with the violin is that it'll sound pretty awful when you're first starting out, and for the first few years. With other instruments, such as piano, you can produce a decent sound from the beginning because you don't have to worry as much about the intonation. However, with violin the intonation is much more difficult, as well as bow control and everything else.

If you have the time and patience, then go for it. It takes awhile, but when you can finally produce a good sound, it is extremely fulfilling.

How would i go about learning the electric violin, i play regular... are there any books?

I might buy an electric violin, are there any books designed to teach electric violin and also like shredding?

How would i go about learning the electric violin, i play regular... are there any books?paramount theater

Actually, it's not much different. I mainly play traditional violin, but I have played electric violins in the past.

There are in fact books, but I wouldn't recommend them by any means. If you have a teacher or instructor of some sort, you might try chatting with them about whether they'd be able to help you in this area. Learning from a professional in person is the best way to go; that way, you won't have to be your own judge, or second - guess your techniques.

Essentially, though, it's the same. Depending on the electric violin you get; all models are different, it'll probably be a different shape. But, it should be set up in such a way that you can hold and play it as you would any other violin.

If your main concern is learning to play it, and you're worried it'll be too much of a contrast with normal playing, though I assure you it's not, you can consider getting a pickup and amp for the violin you already play. That way, there's very little difference, and you can switch back and forth at will. It would also be more comfortable for you, most likely.

How would i go about learning the electric violin, i play regular... are there any books?theatre opera theater

Not really, the electric violin is played the same as an acoustic one.

Oh, I see...you want to sound like Hendrix on the violin ? I have never seen any books on this subject. I would learn your blues scales and experiment with harmonics too .

I think a harmonic note thrown it at the right place could sound like an electric guitar feedback.

Some effect pedals would be good too. I have heard electric violin put through a wah pedal and a distortion pedal. Go easy on the distortion though....too much can sound like crap ; you just need a touch. The wah pedal sounds cool.

Make sure you have a decent amp ; reverb is a must for this sort of music.

PS is this what you want to play ?

What is a good age for an active child to start violin?

I am the step mom. But my childs bio mom wants her to start violin now at age five. However, my step daughter tells me it's boring and wants to dance and swim. I'm not sure what to tell her. She tells her mom that she wants to play the violin when asked. So why would she tell me the opposite? I try to encourage her to learn the violin. Thats when she tells ME she does not like it. I have not told the mom she is telling me these things. Should I? Should i leave it alone, and keep encouraging her to play, like her mom wants? Or should i try to find a dance class for her. Of course I would talk the dance class over with her mom before i do anything. What would you do?

What is a good age for an active child to start violin?home theater system

AS YOUNG AS POSSIBLE! get her started on violin! that is wonderful! dont find a dance class. ask her mom if its okay if you go (or the 4 or 5 of you) buy a violin for her together, then you should all pitch in to pay for a private lessons instructor.

IM SO GLAD SHE WANTS TO START YOUNG! playing an instrument, especially violin, helps with hand/eye coordination, and reading music will help her with almost everything! i give you loads of kudos! do whatever it takes to get her interested.

What is a good age for an active child to start violin?the grand theater opera theater

Four or five isn't unusual, particularly for the Suzuki method. Leave this to the mom and dad to decide, though.
You should tell her father what she is saying and express your concerns. Then it is up to him if he wants to discuss it with her mother. Otherwise, I would stay out of it.

You also need to tell the little girl that if she really doesn't like violin and would rather do something else that she should talk to her mom and/or dad about it. She's not too young to speak up for herself.
I would talk to the mother about maybe signing the little one up for some swimming classes, don't even mention the violin...or at the most, say that it's good for a child to be well rounded...physical activities and music, etc. If it's ok, then I would talk to the little one and tell her that if she continues with the violin, then she can go to swimming too. When she gets a little older and more capable of expressing herself, if she still feels like she doesn't want to play violin, then you could help her to talk to her mom about it. Think of it like this, little kids don't always like to eat certain foods (like veggies), but as parents, we make them try everything. Given an acceptable attempt at trying it, if they still don't like it, we don't make them eat it. I would treat the violin and any other situation the same way. How does she know if she doesn't give herself a chance to really try? Also, you could ask her what she doesn't like about playing the violin and try to help correct those things. Maybe she doesn't like the teacher or the music, etc.
sounds like she really likes you so she feels like she can tell you what she wants to do but she probably doesn't want her mom to find out that she is able to tell you what she really wants to do. Violin at age 5 is kinda extreme its a hard instrument to play. Sounds like its more for what her real mom wants than her and well it just pressuring her and pressuring a 5 year old is not a good way to go. Tell her mom what she told you tell her she wants to dance and swim and that maybe let her grow a little more before you start her on violin don't keep encouraging her to play violin because it will just make her think you don't understand. But be careful how you tell her mom like find a sneaky way of doing it like say she is so interested in dance i cant even get her to practice violin because she just keeps dancing you should really consider a dance class or whatever works without getting her mad.
5..she is trying to play you guys up against each other. Tell her Mom what she says. It will be best if she have to say what she want or don't want in front of both of you. if she sees you together she will realize she cant play you guys up against each other.

ive played the violin since i was eight and im almost eighteen now, you cant really take any extra steps to "step up to the next level" except to practice, really. it all depends on how well you want to play and how much effort you are willing to put into getting there. Sorry it's a lame answer and not a quick fix or anything, but get a teacher or a friend who knows how to play to help you..its tricky stuff if you're doing orchestral.
You're "about" to learn violin, meaning you're just starting? I would recommend private lessons. If you haven't found a private teacher:

Some other things you can do to improve your musicianship would be to:

1. Read books about music and specifically, violin pedagogy. See:

2. Listen to music a great deal, especailly if you can listen with the scores in hand. See:

3. Go to as many live concerts as are available in your area.

4. Find a really, really good teacher, and develop a practice routine.

Good luck!
just gradually increase the difficulty for each piece you learn to play. say, first you learn twinkle twinkle, then maybe go tell aunt rhody, then maybe eye of the tiger, then maybe bluegrass bingo, then maybe cannon in d, just bring up the diffuculty. to really get better you should get a teacher.

but I dont want a crap either.

What is a good beginners violin?sunshine

Just my few cents for what it's worth:

Go and listen to a few different violins. Best to stick with a specialized string shop, they will have people there with the knowledge and training to "set you up" with the proper outfit. Try the violins yourself, put them under your chin and draw the bow across a few of the strings (Someone there can help you.) It should sound loud to you and clear, you may want to "jump" the first time you hear it, this is good, you will get used to it. If it sounds mellow and soft to listen to when you play it, it will probably not sound as pleasing to anyone else listening and as you progress you will just become frustrated not being ablt to project the sound you want. The look of the violin doesn't always mean good tone, high cost doesn't guarantee that either.

Assuming you are an averaged sized adult,

you will want a full size 4/4 (better sound quality)

Also, for the first three strings G,D,A, you will want to use a "wound synthetic core" string, avoid the steel strings here. It's all about the sound quality. Yes Dominant are very good, not cheap but I believe worth the money. For young beginners maybe not so much. However for an adult beginner you will probably enjoy the sound much better, therefore enjoy playing more.

For the last string E, dont' bother spending the money, you wont notice a differnce, the pitch is to high. Go ahead and use a steel string, like Piastro.

For a beginner, renting can be a good idea, especially if you decide not to continue. However, rentals are usually not the best quality and do not have the best sound. You will not enjoy playing a poor sounding instrument, even as a beginner. When your violin has good sound, you will enjoy playing it much more, even if it is only a one octave C scale. Good luck, I love playing my violin, hopefully you will learn to as well. Whoa, I wrote a novel, sorry.

VIOLIN

Violins come in different sizes (1/16, 1/10, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 4/4-Full Size) for the different sizes/ages of children.

It is best to rent a violin for 3 reasons:

1.

If the student decides to quit after 2 weeks.

2.

Children have growth spurts and need a larger instrument.

3.

Children can drop/bang their instrument causing costly repairs. Rental violins have insurance coverage included in the rental fee that will cover repair costs.

Most parents wait until their child needs a full size violin (4/4) before buying an instrument.
try one with just a couple of strings till you get used to them
This question should not be left for people in this site to answer.
when I was learning, I rented a violin. It was 20 dollars or so a month, and most shops will rent to own. So you can rent it, and either turn it in if you don't like it, or just buy it if you love it. Also, these plans, you can normally try out different bows, and models of violins. Good Luck!! I hope you love it as much as I did! Let me know if you need anything else. I would suggest Dominic (?) strings, they are really good and they last for a while. You may want to get another brand of E string, the dominic E tends to be a little scratchy.

At the craft store they sell mouldable plastic that you form %26amp; bake in the oven %26amp; it turn %26amp; remains very hard, then you could use two sided sticky tape %26amp; tape it on, that way you can remove it with a little alcohol if you ever get a better one.
well you konw foam right? well if you put that or cloth on top of the violin it would be comfortable. or just put something that is comfortable to you !
use a good size sponge and attach it to your violin with a rubber band...

Yes I do, I know a lot of people who have done this, with daily practice you'll get back into shape in about six months, good luck to you, I play classical guitar, but violin was my second choice, someday I still hope to pick it up. I have a disk problem in my neck and several times I've had to give it up for a while, and then went right back into it, just remember daily practice works wonders even if you just start out with an hour a day !!!!!!!!
Yeah it will be easy to pick up coz 3 yrs of practice isn't forgotten so easy so don't worry u can get back into ur violin in a few days and if u practice for substantial amount it shud work fine :)
It might be...I mean you probably remember what to do and what not to do. It's really not something you forget...
Remember how your teacher used to tell you "practice, practice, practice"? Well, that hasn't changed. :) Your body will remember the basics (keeping left wrist back, etc.), but it will take practice to get back the "effortless" feeling - when you look at a sheet of music and your fingers automatically know what to do. Try starting off with scales (yeah, i know, ick) and simpler pieces. Sevchik is a really good book to get yourself limbered up again (the triplet section especially, IMHO). Congrats on coming back!
You won't remember everything at once, but eventually you will start remembering how to play scales, how to hold your instrument etc. You might want to get private lessons to get you started playing again.

GOOD LUCK!!!
