most guitar players dont really read or learn music at all, thats about 97.9% or guitarist dont know how to read music. all i can tell you that if you want to play guitar go ahead, i started the same age as you are now, i have been playing guitar since 1999 and i did learn how to read music, but its more fun when you learn songs you hear on the radio, that would give you a better basic

You could take lessons at your local music store, (if they offer them). Its good to learn to read sheet music. But you can also learn to read tabs and learn to play the songs you like.

As far as cost acoustic is generally cheaper than electric. With electric you have to buy an amp along with it. You could get a decent electric for around 250 to 300 dollars. An decent acoustic is somewhere around... $120-$150. Whether or not you want get an acoustic or electric depends on what kind of music you like.
trust me, learning guitar is easy, i got started with only one begginer book, i didn't even finish it, i got bored of the book and started learning songs after 1 or 2 months. just get a book and chord chart to get started, then learn how to read guitar tabs and stuff. but no matter what, DO NOT STOP PLAYING VIOLIN!!! or else i'll personaly come and smash up your guitar, no i won't but don't stop, trust me. i stopped playing piano years ago cause i thought it was boring, cause my lessons were boring. but not i regret that decision...i would LOVE to remember how to play piano...

anyways, you can find everything you need at your local musical instrument store. don't buy a guitar from a place like best buy or radio shack, they suck, have crappy tone, and horrible quality. go to a music store, ask them questions, i recommend acoustic, but theres nothing wrong with starting out electric, i just recommend acoustic. but i started electric...anyways, just go to a music store and ask them to show you starter packs if you wanna save money on an electric, or you can go to a pawn shop.
Take classes, listen to a lot of guitarist of the genre you want to play, practice, practice, practice
Nylon string classical guitars are cheap and probably the easiest guitar to learn on.

I bought a "blemished" version of this one for $80!
