There are many great brands, and many great instruments with virtually unknown names. I recommend going to this website: http://www.williamsgengakkiviolin.com/. Click "Buyer Handbook" and read "Chapter 1. Market Value vs. Intrinsic Value of Stringed Instruments" This shop specializes in finding excellent quality instruments that don't cost as much because they don't carry a well-known name. I had a student purchase a viola from there a while ago for around $1000 that sounded and played like it cost a lot more. I believe they will send you some instruments in your price range through the mail so that you and your teacher can try them out. Definitely get help from a trusted teacher in selecting your instrument. Best wishes to you.
We bought a new violin from Hiroshi Izuka of Philadelphia (he makes violins and violas) and it was an absolutely beautiful violin...and affordable too. That was a while back but you should still be able to buy one from him for under $20,000...but it may take a while if he doesn't have any currently available.

Or if you are interested, you can attend auctions at Christies in New York and get a pretty nice violin..they won't be new if that's what you want, but you can buy a very nice violin for around $15k~$20k.
